Assistant Coach, Long Island University Men's Soccer

Rich Scheer joins the Blackbirds’ men’s soccer staff in his first season as the graduate assistant coach. Scheer works with the Blackbirds in a variety of roles, primarily as the goalkeeper coach.
 
Scheer assists in practice planning and coordinates game and training film. Scheer is a vital part of Long Island’s recruiting efforts and scouting of high school and prep athletes. In 2008, Scheer oversaw the improvement of a young crop of goalkeepers. Under his direction, goalkeeper Adam Janssen put together a scoreless streak of 325:29. The Blackbirds posted five shutouts in 2008 in Scheer’s first season.

Scheer enjoyed a standout playing career at Syracuse University from 2001-05. He ranks fifth on the school’s all-time list with a 1.23 goals against average and in 2004 he posted a 1.04 GAA, which ranks ninth on the single-season list for the Orange. He collected BIG EAST Academic Honor Roll recognition during his career and was also a BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honoree.

Scheer came to LIU after serving as the marketing manager for rEvolution Sports Marketing and ESPN in 2008. His primary role was to promote and increase awareness for the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament, while managing a staff and providing market information to rEvolution and ESPN.
 
Following his playing career, Scheer spent almost three years with the Red Bull New York and MetroStars franchise of Major League Soccer. Scheer joined the MetroStars in 2004 as an intern and was responsible for compiling reports for corporate sponsors and developing and executing programming for the MetroStars Coaches Club. He was promoted to manager of grassroots marketing for Red Bull New York in May of 2005. In that role he helped lead the re-branding of the MetroStars franchise and was responsible for organizing promotions and partnership programs, while overseeing interns. Scheer also organized and managed the club’s initiative to start a freestyle soccer exhibition team.
 
A native of Livingston, N.J., Scheer graduated from Syracuse’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management with a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing management. He was a Dean’s List student and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll member.
